Celebrating 250 years at Joshua Ellis

Joshua Ellis is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of luxury cashmere, woollen cloth and accessories and in 2017 we are proud to be celebrating our 250th anniversary.

Our journey began in the mill towns of Yorkshire during Britain’s textile heyday where we carry on the tradition, supplying high quality cloth and accessories to an international market. Artisan skills have been passed down through the generations and our thriving apprenticeship scheme, which covers all aspects of manufacture, design and sales, is bringing new talent into the industry to keep Britain at the forefront of global designer fashion.

Mill Memories

We had a wonderful visit last Friday from Sheila (above left) and Margaret Watson, who had inherited two Joshua Ellis mill photographs from a relative. They kindly got in touch to ask if we would like to not only see the photos, but keep them for our archives. We enjoyed hearing their memories of their father, aunts’ and grandfather’s roles within the mill and their own visits to the former Batley Carr site as children.

After Joshua Ellis moved to its current location in 2003, the historic buildings at Batley Carr were converted into living accommodation, and the two mill chimneys remain on the site today as landmarks to its former use.

Building on this, the two companies are now pleased to announce that from February 1st 2016 the exclusive partnership will be extended to woven cloth developments – both seasonal collections and bespoke; worsted and woollen.

The Escorial Company markets its exclusive Escorial fibre – a rare and luxurious wool from the small Escorial sheep found in small numbers in Australia and New Zealand. Possessing unique performance characteristics, Escorial fibre creates fabrics with superior drape and resilience with a distinctive soft handle.

Teasels – the finishing touch

Visitors to our showroom often do not realise that this jar standing proudly next to our bunch books and swatch cards contains one of our most important tools: the humble teasel, responsible for adding the distinctive finishing touch to our luxurious cashmere.

The teasel plant, or Dipsacus sativus, bears resemblance to the thistle with its spiked crown at the end of a long stalk. The spikes protect the seeds, and the dried seed heads have been used in Europe since medieval times to brush woollen fabrics to create a raised finish [1].

2003 Relocation from Batley Carr to new premises

Joshua Ellis has been manufacturing at this site since the latter part of the 18th century following moving part of the business from the other side of Dewsbury to consolidate onto the one site in the 19th century. It is this historical connection, and our skilled staff, who in the main live in close proximity to the Mill, and in particular within the area of Batley Carr, that we began discussions in the boardroom as to the best way we may now serve our customers in the 21st century.

To provide the best possible service we have been considering the production options to enable us to meet the new demands for our exclusive products into current and future bespoke customers, and which can be better managed from design concept to final cloth or accessory delivery.
